December 1, 2009 (WASHINGTON, D.C.) The National Transportation Safety Board today issued 19 recommendations regarding Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS). These recommendations address various safety issues including the use of autopilots like the HeliSAS. The autopilot recommendation is one of 19 recommendations made by the NTSB to improve safety and reduce accidents in EMS operations. Specifically, the recommendation for autopilots says: “Equip helicopters that are used in emergency medical services transportation with autopilots, and train pilots to use the autopilot if a second pilot is not available.
